Hack(saw)ing the Lyra 2201

The raised buttons on the Lyra 2201 make the damned thing almost unusable. Try wearing or carrying it anywhere and you definitely will bump the stop, pause or skip buttons - often.

So instead of waiting around for a hack that would allow someone to program a key lock for it, I grabbed my hacksaw and got to work..

Taking it apart

lyra

It's real easy to take apart - just keep unscrewing everything until you can pull the board away from the face. I'd show pictures of that, but it really is that simple, and most importantly, I didn't start taking pictures until I had already chopped down the play and stop buttons - as shown above.

Lowering the buttons

cut buttons

The stop button (on the right) has been cut off and reattached. You can see where I've just started on the play button. The hacksaw killed about a millimeter. If you cut nice and straight, it will look perfect when glued back on.

The Finished Product

depressed buttons

Here it is with the Play, Stop, Rev & Fwd buttons cut down and out of the way. I was a little sloppy with the Rev & Fwd buttons & they look a little crooked now. Oh well.

And of course the important question - does it solve the problem? Absolutely. The button bumping almost never happens now, I have to poke it with something to stop it by accident.
